In 2003, Marco Reosti put out a 7” for his own band, Mumbler, under the label “Salinas,” named for the hometown of his favorite author. For most of the next decade, Salinas Records was housed in a basement storage unit rented for $25 a month on Detroit’s 2nd Avenue. In 10 years, Marco has put out almost 50 records, many of which contribute to the modern pop punk canon. Neither hyper-punk, nor particularly slick pop, Salinas is a reliable middle ground of earnest, gritty expression with faithfully melodic underpinnings.-bc

Blue-Collar Sci-Fi Pros Robbi Rodriguez & Simon Oliver ‘Collide’ In Gorgeous New Vertigo Series

Collider is a new ongoing Vertigo series starting next month that sees its authors returning to a high concept hook that may be familiar to readers of their previous work, but from all appearances seems to be a considerable step up in style from the already enjoyable comics they’ve created before. Previously writer Simon Oliver worked on Vertigo’s five-volume series The Exterminators (with Tony Moore), which detailed the adventures of a hapless ex-con employed as a pest control professional who runs up against dangerous cockroach monsters mutated by a chemical agents created by an irresponsible super-science outfit. Along similar lines but in a completely different tone, artist Robbi Rodriguez i s a ComicsAlliance favorite who made a name for himself (with writer Jim Massey) on the Oni Press comedy Maintenance. Optioned as a film by DreamWorks Animation, that three-volume series followed the exploits of a couple of janitors employed by TerrorMax, Inc., purveyor of various crimes against science and nature.

What Rodriguez has described as ”a mash-up of Bruce Springsteen and Kurt Vonnegut —blue collar sci-fi,” Collider features the fictional Federal Bureau of Physics, whose mandate is to address problems like “temporary gravity failures, time reversal loops, and entropy reversals.” Those are the kinds of words we like to hear coming out of Vertigo, and the following pictures by Rodriguez, the extremely talented colorist Rico Renzi and cover artist Nathan Fox are definitely the kinds of things we want to see more of in sci-fi comics.

what you fail to realize is that video games shouldn’t cater to females in the first place. It’s largely known that it’s targeted towards the MALE demographic and has been for so many years, so why would they ask for something like that to be handed to them on a goddamn silver platter?

that’s like a guy walking into the women’s department of clothing at a sears and demanding that there be more clothing for men there. Separation of sections be damned.

the game industry is more like walking into a regular department store and seeing that all the clothes are only men’s clothes

and when you ask the cashier where the women’s clothing section is, they wheel out a small rack of cheaply made tutus, g-strings, and high heels all in bright pink

and then when you go “wow really that’s it” you get called an uppity bitch and everybody assumes you want all the focus on you when in reality you’d just like to be considered a worthwhile demographic since you also like to wear clothes, it’s not like you want some ridiculous getup, you just want a solid shirt and pair of pants that fits you alright.

I mean hell you even sort of like men’s clothes and you have no problem wearing them. They suit you well. But it’s very obvious once you throw on a pair of men’s pants that they were not made for you.

The thing is “Xena” is one of the best examples of a simpler time in televised sci-fi and fantasy (that wasn’t written by Joss Whedon), a time that was more colorful, fun, and not quite as blood-drenched.

At least until the last couple of episodes, when everything kind of went bananas in pajamas:

Xena is such a fun show and actually has held up pretty good. Also, what show in the 90s DIDN’T GO apeshit towards the end?
